Sweet history to be part of festival

THE history of sweet manufacturing in Hull is to be celebrated as part of the city’s Yum! festival of food, drink, and music.

Inspired by their own archive collections and the heritage of the Needlers brand, staff at Hull History Centre have created a family event based around a typical worker at the company’s factory in Sculcoates Lane in the 1950s.

The event will trace the history and the products of Needlers, which was an internationally-renowned brand, and will also look at the difficulties of operating in the confectionery sector in the post-war era, with rationing still in force.

Sweet Sensations – Unwrapping Needlers will take place at the centre from noon until 2pm on Friday, August 9, and is one of many free events at the festival, which is organised by Hull BID and runs between August 8 and 9.

Tracy Pallett, audience development officer at Hull History Centre, said: “We’re really looking forward to taking part in Yum! and welcoming families to an event which will give them some insight into the history of one of Hull’s most famous businesses. Needlers was to Hull what Cadbury’s was to Birmingham, and it should be of great interest to children.”
