Swimmer goes the extra mile in aid of mental health

IT’s the same distance from Sheffield to London on the M1.

But swimmer Gary Marshall will be donning a wetsuit when he climbs into the river Trent at Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire, to embark on his 155-mile journey to its confluence with the river Humber.

Mr Marshall is setting out on the challenge in aid of mental health charity Mind – and says he has days when the enormity of what lies ahead does seem daunting.

Mr Marshall, 36, from Chapeltown, Sheffield, previously suffered from depression and wants to spread the message that it’s alright to talk about mental health.

He said: “I know how important it is to talk – it’s the first step on the road to recovery. I want to get people talking and raise money and awareness to support people in getting help and getting better.”

Mr Marshall is currently undergoing an intensive training programme in preparation for his big swim in May and spends two hours a day swimming at Sheffield International Venues’ Ponds Forge International Sports Centre and Concord Sports Centre, as well as taking part in open water events. He is also set to start a personal training programme with SIV, who are supporting him in the run up to the challenge.

Mr Marshall said: “I am incredibly grateful to SIV for their support. I do have days when the enormity of the challenge ahead seems daunting but I’m looking forward to the swim and I know it will be incredibly worthwhile. Mind is a fantastic charity that supports people with mental health issues every step of the way.”

He is hoping to raise £1,000. Visit www.justgiving.com/swimgaryswim.
