Swimming challenge to raise money

A wheelchair-bound woman who has battled depression and crippling arthritis is to take to the open waters of Lake Windermere to raise money for charity.

Caroline Smith, of Skipton, hopes to raise more than £500 for mental health charity Mind by swimming a mile in the Great North Swim in the lake on Sunday (June 15).

Ms Smith, 60, said: “Because of my increasing physical problems I think this is the last opportunity I will have to swim a mile. I have a lot of pain normally. I get a lot of support. I could not do it without my husband Graham and my friend Carine. She takes me to the baths at Skipton three times a week and she will do the mile with me.”

The former social worker had to give up work due to her health and has lost more than five stone in recent years.
