Swing bridge project prepares to take shape as giant pieces arrive

A GIANT "Meccano kit" that will be put together to form a landmark footbridge across the River Hull has started arriving on site.

As the latest phase of piling work gets under way on the site of the 7.5m project, the main structure that will become a 350-tonne swing bridge is making its slow journey by road in 15 pieces after being constructed at the Qualter Hall factory in Barnsley.

The installation is expected to take place in August and will see a three-day stoppage of river traffic while it is assembled by a floating crane.

Tim Wigglesworth, senior development manager at project managers Hull Forward, said: "It's an important milestone. People will soon be able to see the structure itself as they drive past, people will really start to live and breathe it."

The bridge will not only open up a new pedestrian route between Hull's Old Town and the East Bank, but become a visitor attraction in its own right.

Based on a concept by award-winning architects McDowell and Benedetti – whose landmark schemes include Castleford Bridge over the River Aire – the structure will offer pedestrians the chance to "ride" on the bridge as it swings open to allow boats to pass along the river.

The 16-metre diameter circular structure on the West Bank will house a bistro offering diners stunning views.
