Switch to fortnightly bin collections

A TOTAL of 24 jobs are to be axed at Hull Council as part of its move to fortnightly bin collections.

The losses, which will all come as a result of streetscene staff taking voluntary redundancy, will also see the city’s bin men switch to a four-day week, ending Monday collections.

The changes to the rounds collecting non-recyclable waste will take place over two weeks starting from Tuesday, May 14, and will save the authority £1m a year.

Blue and brown recycling bins are already collected fortnightly.

Coun Martin Mancey, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “To achieve a smooth transition to fortnightly collections we need the support of our residents and I hope that we can encourage them to recycle more.

“I want to thank our residents in Hull who last year helped us to save £2.5m in landfill tax by recycling 50 per cent of their waste, making us a top performing urban council, although we want to continue to increase our recycling rate to over 60 per cent.”

East Riding Council began rolling out fortnightly bin collections in March and expects to have completed this by the end of the year.
