Sword dance: Yorkshire hails Plough Sunday

Communities across Yorkshire celebrated Plough Sunday in style yesterday as church services were held across the region accompanied by traditional dances from sword and morris men.

The Claro Sword Morris Dancers, with sword man Mike Benson were among the groups taking part, at St Johns Church, Knaresborough. The event, which dates back to medieval times, traditionally meant the end of the farm workers' annual holiday and signalled the start of ploughing. Picture: SIMON HULME
