Takeaways join battle against litter in trial scheme

Calderdale Council is working with food and drink businesses in the Park Ward area to sign up to a new voluntary code of practice.

The code, which has been drawn up by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, asks retailers to sign up to positive actions, including:

Supporting community clean ups;

Displaying anti-litter posters;

Keeping their shop fronts litter-free;

Reviewing the packaging they use.

Businesses who sign up to the scheme will display a Proud of Park poster.

The code is one element of the Proud of Park scheme, which aims to reduce litter and fly-tipping through "education, enforcement and engagement".

The council's Safer Cleaner Greener team, with Halifax Central Initiative, has identified problem areas. They are working with local schools and the community to educate people about keeping their environment clean and tidy.

In addition, more staff have been trained to issue fixed penalty notices to anyone who allows dogs to foul in public spaces.

It is hoped the scheme will be rolled out across Calderdale after being piloted in Park Ward.

Coun Pauline Nash, the council's Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: "It's good to see members of the community working together to make Park Ward cleaner and greener.

"I encourage local takeaway, food and drink businesses to sign up to the code and help us keep Calderdale clean and tidy."
