Talk aims to breathe new life into district's historic homes

MAGNIFICENT country homes clustered around Ripon dating from the 12th century to the present day, are to be brought to life in a new talk.

A collection of homes including Norton Conyers, which has Anglo-Saxon foundations and has been home to the Graham family since 1624, the 14th century medieval manor house Markenfield Hall, Studley Hall and Hollin Hall, which is not open to the public, will all be featured in the talk.

The chairman of Ripon Civic Society which is organising the event, David Winpenny, said: "Ripon is blessed with having these wonderful buildings around it. It is fantastic that we have so many historic properties around the area and with such an interesting history behind them.

"Hollin Hall is not opened to the public and Markenfield Hall, which is an exceptional example of a medieval manor mouse which has hardly changed since it was built in the 14th century, is only rarely open as well."

The talk, entitled Historic Houses around Ripon will be on Thursday, December 2, at Allhallowgate Methodist Church Hall, Victoria Grove, Ripon, and taken by Maurice Taylor, a local historian and a vice president of Ripon Civic Society.

The event is due to start at 7.30pm. Non-members of Ripon Civic Society are welcome but admission will be 2.
