Talk on mill’s turning fortune over centuries

THE history of York’s only surviving windmill will be showcased after an ambitious restoration project has brought it back into use.

A talk will be held tomorrow about the changing fortunes of Holgate Windmill, which was built in about 1770 two miles west of the city centre.

The talk will highlight the landmark building’s use from the 18th century until milling ceased in 1933 and the site became semi-derelict as York’s expanding suburbs gradually surrounded it.

The Holgate Windmill Preservation Society was established in 2001 before work began to bring the building back into working order. A £500,000 restoration was undertaken before it was officially opened in June.

York Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, Coun Sonja Crisp, said: ‘This is an amazing story of a much loved feature of York being bought back to life. Holgate Windmill plays an important part in helping us to understand our social history.”

The illustrated talk by experts Richie Green and Helen Hoult will take place at Acomb Explore Library Learning Centre from 6pm to 7pm. Tickets cost £4 and can be booked by calling 01904 552651.
