Talks hope on averting city bins strike

UNION bosses have said they hope negotiations could avert a series of strikes planned by Sheffield refuse collectors later this month.

Staff who work for private firm Veolia, which has the contract to collect the city’s waste, have voted to strike on April, 13, 20 and 27 in a dispute over pay.

GMB union spokesman Peter Davies said workers were furious over a two-year pay freeze imposed as Veolia received payment increases from the council.

However, he added: “You can understand the anger from our members but we will be pulling out all the stops to avoid this action.”
