Talks on store closure 'productive'

CIVIC leaders and MPs in North Lincolnshire say they have held a productive meeting with representatives of Marks and Spencer over the company's plans to close its Scunthorpe store.

The retailer announced last week it planned to close its branch in Scunthorpe High Street with the loss of 36 jobs, blaming a decline in sales and profits over the last three years.

Senior officials from the firm met North Lincolnshire Council leader Mark Kirk, Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin, and Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy yesterday.

Mr Dakin said: "I'm very keen, like others, to see M&S stay in Scunthorpe. It's been here a very long time and people have a good relationship with the store.

"Not only that, Scunthorpe has tremendous potential for economic growth, which we are already starting to see. So it would be real shame to see it close."

The firm, which is consulting on the proposals, opened the branch in 1932.
