Taste of future

THERE are few finer afternoon delicacies than a freshly-made scone, preferably served with the very precise quantities of cream and jam recommended by University of Sheffield scientists (and food lovers) who have just devised a recipe for the perfect cream tea.

Yet, despite the global reputation of renowned Yorkshire institutions like Bettys, cream teas are still regarded as a quaint British tradition. This could change, however, if Barnsley scone manufacturer Haywood & Padgett’s mouth-watering trade mission to China next week provides sufficient food for thought in the Far East.

In a taste of the future, the bakery, which has risen from small beginnings in Wombwell nearly 30 years ago, believes that English scones could find a new market as a succulent breakfast dish for the Chinese. Given that politicians say that increasing exports hold the key to Britain’s economic recovery, it is encouraging to see one Yorkshire firm putting its money where its mouth is – literally.
