Tax campaign targets doctors

THE Government has launched a scheme to encourage medical professionals to come clean about any tax they have failed to pay.

The Tax Health Plan is targeted at health consultants who boost their income by doing private work, which they fail to declare to HM Revenue and Customs.

The scheme is the latest phase in HMRC's crackdown on people it believes may have underpaid their tax.

Under the scheme, medical professionals have until March 31 to make a voluntary disclosure about any income they have not declared. In exchange for this, they will be given a reduced penalty of 10 per cent of the amount they owe, as well as having to pay the outstanding tax.
