Tax offices hit by walk-out

A strike by tax workers in a row over privatisation was well supported yesterday, with thousands of staff, joining picket lines or staying away from offices.

The Public and Commercial Services union estimated 14,500 of its members at HM Revenue and Customs took part in the 24-hour walkout, saying it caused “significant disruption”.

Enquiry lines carried recorded announcements telling people to deal with any problems online. HMRC has decided not to issue penalty fines to anyone missing Tuesday’s deadline for self-assessment returns.
