Taxi drivers fined for after tyre problems spotted

FOUR taxi drivers in Bradford have been fined after their tyres were found to have insufficient tread during random spot checks in the city.

The operation aimed to ensure vehicles were fit for use and to crack down on any that were not up to standard.

The checks on taxis operating around Bradford were carried out by the Tong and Wyke Neighbourhood Policing Team which joined forces with Bradford Council's licensing officers for the operation.

A total of 34 taxis were stopped and checked last week with four suspended for having insufficient tread on their tyres.

Pc Oliver Bentley of the Neighbourhood Policing Team said they would now have to pay the price.

He said: "Each of those who were stopped in respect of their tyres received 60 fines and three penalty points on their licence. Five other taxi drivers were given advisory notices for other matters.

"Of the drivers we stopped and spoke to, a majority of their vehicles were of good standard and happy to co-operate in the operation.

"It is imperative, however that those who are not operating within the law are identified as they are potentially putting their passengers safety in jeopardy.

"These checks mean we can catch any defects on cars used for public transport early while ensuring that drivers are keeping to the terms of their licence."

Pc Bentley said the operation underlined efforts to ensure taxis and private hire vehicles are safe for those who use them.

Coun Imran Hussain, executive member for safer communities and deputy leader of the council, said: "We want to assure that the public is safe when they step into a taxi and we fully support the initiative being taken by the police."
