Taxi review proposes changes to boost trade

MAJOR changes are planned to taxi ranks in three of Yorkshire's busiest resorts to increase passenger convenience and stop other drivers pinching the spaces.

Concern about the number, promotion, and enforcement of taxi ranks in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey dates back to 2008.

Traders and others were concerned about the large number of ranks all over the place, some with only single spaces.

In some, taxi drivers often found shoppers had stolen the spaces.

A review has now come up with sweeping changes.

In Scarborough, these include reinstating or increasing the size of night-time ranks at Aberdeen Walk, St Thomas Street and the North Street Link Road.

Those on Westborough outside Lord Rosebery's, Vernon Road, and Falconers Road will be removed.

If a more suitable rank can go onto Albermarle Crescent or an alternative town centre location, the Northway rank may become a bus stop during the day with taxis restricted to night times.

Under the proposals, the Peasholm Gap rank would be bigger.

The rank on Sandside and adjoining coach bays would be designated for 24-hour shared use by both taxis and coaches.

Signs will be put up to deter illegal private parking.

New ranks at St Nicholas Cliff, Scarborough and Albermarle Crescent may also appear.

In Filey, new ranks could be laid out on the seafront including one south side of Church Ravine as near to the Coble Landing as possible.

In Whitby, the ranks in Windsor Terrace and on New Quay Road and Bridge Street will be increased and open until 2am. New night-time ranks in the bus station and outside the Boyes store in Station Square are also being considered.
