A YORKSHIRE local authority has taken the idea of a “millionaires’ budget” to a whole new level after hitting residents with a £1122m council tax bill for the coming financial year.

In York Council’s new tax booklet sent out to residents across the city, the tax demands have been added up to millions rather than thousands.

According to the booklet, gross expenditure will come in at £354937m for 2012/2013, while the average Band D household would be charged £1090m council tax for this year, and £1122m for the next, by the city’s Labour administration.

Coun Ian Gillies, leader of the Tory opposition, said: “I knew costs would go up under Labour, but this is ridiculous.” The council has apologised for the error.
