Taxis and minicabs fail safety tests

FEWER than half the taxis and minicabs checked in a crackdown by Scarborough Council were given clean bills of health – even though the spotchecks found fewer defects than last year.

The operation – also involving police, customs, and the Vehicle Operator Services Agency – aimed to find defects such as faulty headlights, indicators, tyres and handbrakes.

Last September, six fixed penalty notices, six immediate and five delayed suspensions and 10 advisory notices were issued.

Of 35 taxi and private hire vehicles inspected this time, only 16 passed. One driver was ordered off the road because the state of his vehicle while another was ordered to fix excessive suspension corrosion and another defective steering to avoid suspension.

Una Faithfull, Scarborough Council's licensing manager, said: "It was good to see some improvement since the last inspection."
