Fly-tipping cost taxpayers an estimated £46m last year as councils across England brought nearly 2,500 prosecutions up by more than 20 per cent on the previous year.

Last year, local authorities issued 116,500 warning letters and 2,100 formal cautions relating to fly-tipping. The vast majority of prosecutions were successful, but the cost to councils of cleaning away dumped items during the year was estimated to be 45.8m.
