Teachers and students lackbelief in exams system

Many teachers and students have no confidence in England's exams system, a study suggests today.

Research conducted by the exams watchdog Ofqual shows concerns about potential inaccuracy in results.

The findings show that while about half (49 per cent) of A-level teachers, pupils and employers think that error in a mark which does not affect an overall grade is not cause for concern, more than nine in 10 (90 per cent) think errors which result in a candidate receiving a different grade from one they deserve is serious.

A survey found that almost six in ten students (58 per cent) say they are not confident in the exams system, along with nearly four in ten (38 per cent) teachers and 61 per cent of employers.

While nearly nine in ten (89 per cent) of teachers felt their students got the grades they deserved, just 17 per cent of students said the same. Maths and science were perceived to have fewer “grade misclassifications” than English.
