Sgt Steve Askham of South Yorkshire Police said: "An ambulance responding to a medical emergency has been in collision with a white Citroen van that appears to have emerged from a side road."

The van driver was rushed to hospital with a police escort. The paramedic was unhurt in the collision.

Officers cordoned off Granville Road between the junctions with Shrewsbury Road to Norfolk Park Road.

An eyewitness said the road closure caused chaos as drivers looked for alternative routes.

He added: "Both vehicles looked in a really bad way."
