Teenager back in court over murder of Katie Rough, 7, in York

The 15-year-old girl appeared at Leeds Crown Crown Court today over the death of Katie Rough.

The youngster was found in a field with severe lacerations to her neck and chest on Monday and later died in hospital.

The defendant, who cannot be named, appeared in court on screen via a video link for the five minute hearing.

She was accompanied by her solicitor, Colin Byrne, who sat beside her and answered questions about her identity on her behalf.

The 15-year-old, who was wearing a blue jacket and black trousers and has long brown hair, did not speak during the brief hearing.

Members of her family sat on one side of the court away from a large number of reporters in the public gallery.

The defendant is charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon - a knife.

No pleas were entered to either charge and no application was made for bail.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier, QC, adjourned the case for five weeks. A plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on Friday February 17.

The teenager was remanded into secure accommodation until the next hearing.

A trial date will be fixed at the next hearing, depending on the defendant’s pleas.

The court heard the case would be dealt with by a High Court judge.

The judge also reminded members of the media present in court that nothing should be reported that would lead to the identification of the defendant.

Earlier this week, people living near to where Katie was injured said her mother, named locally as Alison Rough, fell to her knees in the street, crying and pleading for help after her daughter was injured.

Tracey Ralph, head teacher at Westfield Primary School where Katie was a pupil, paid tribute to the “kind and thoughtful child” who was well-liked by pupils and staff.

Ms Ralph said: “She was hard-working and showed a particular talent for creative writing.

“Her death is a terrible loss which has deeply saddened our school community and we send our profound sympathies to her family.”

Speaking in the House of Commons, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “I’m sure the whole House will join in heartfelt condolences to the family and friends (following) the tragic death of seven-year-old Katie Rough in York earlier this week.

“I think it’s right we send condolences to her family.”

Prime Minister Theresa May said: “I also join you in expressing condolences to the family and friends of little Katie, who died so tragically.”
