Teenager faces jail over death crash

A TEENAGER has been warned he faces jail after he admitted causing the death of Huddersfield student Christian Lang by careless driving.

Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Daniel Neary, 19, of Dawson Road, Newsome, Huddersfield, was just over the drink-drive limit when the VW Golf he was driving collided with a Skoda Fabia on Meltham Road, more than a year ago. Mr Lang, 17, of Broombank in Birkby, was a passenger in the VW Golf.

He was admitted to hospital after the collision, but the former Honley High School pupil died the next day.

Neary appeared in court last month when he denied causing Mr Lang's death by dangerous driving, driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving without insurance, but his case was again listed before a judge yesterday.

The defendant admitted causing Mr Lang's death by careless driving at a time when the alcohol level in his breath exceeded the prescribed limit. He also pleaded guilty to driving the VW Golf without insurance on July 24 last year.

Barrister Ruth Cranidge, for Neary, told Judge John Potter that her client had given a reading of 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath after the crash. The legal limit is 35 micrograms.

Neary's case had been listed for a trial in September, but after his guilty pleas were accepted by the prosecution, Judge Potter adjourned the hearing for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

He also imposed an interim driving ban on Neary and warned him that he faced a custodial sentence.

Neary was granted unconditional bail until the sentencing hearing on September 10.
