Teenager held over Sheffield New Year party murder

DETECTIVES investigating a fatal stabbing at a Sheffield New Year party arrested a teenager today on suspicion of murder.

Father-of-two Joshua Green, 27, is believed to have been stabbed while on the dance floor at the Stars and Mayfair Party Suites in the early hours of New Year’s Day. He died at the scene.

A murder investigation was launched following the reveller’s death and detectives have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of murder, a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said.

Officers were called to the venue on Queen’s Road, about a mile from the city centre, at 2.47am on New Year’s Day.

The venue is in a large building which also houses a casino and roller-skating rink.

Mr Green, from Manor Park, Sheffield, was out with his brother and friends to celebrate the New Year, police said.

Detective Superintendent Andy Thompson, who is leading the investigation, said: “We’ve had a good response from members of the public who were present that night, but we’ve still not been contacted by all 400 partygoers.

“I’d appeal for people in the club on New Year’s Eve to contact the police in confidence so that we can eliminate them from our inquiry.

“Two other people, a man and a woman, were also injured in the club that night. We need to identify witnesses to the assaults so that we can try to establish a sequence of events.”
