Teenager killed and mum injured in crash on A1 in Yorkshire

A TEENAGE boy was killed and his mother seriously injured when they were hit by a lorry in "treacherous" icy road conditions last night in North Yorkshire.

The 16-year-old was travelling in a blue Peugeot 307 car with his 46-year-old mother when they crashed into the central reservation on the A1 near Richmond at around 10pm last night.

The pair, from North Shields in Tyneside, got out of the car following the collision and were thought to be making their way to the hard shoulder when they were struck by an HGV travelling on the road, one mile north of junction 57.

Crews worked for nearly three hours, using specialist heavy rescue equipment, to release the victim.

A fire service spokesman said: "It was a long and protracted rescue in very difficult conditions and sadly the casualty did not survive."

The spokesman said he could not speculate on the cause of the accidents but said the weather conditions would be one of the factors investigated by North Yorkshire Police.

"The roads were treacherous," he said. "It was minus 6C (21.2F) and there were widespread icy roads."
