Teenager nets prize for creating character in online soap opera

A TEENAGE writer is set to see her latest creation brought to life after winning a competition to invent a new housemate for NHS Doncaster's online soap opera DN1.

Hayfield School pupil Lucy Warnock, from Auckley, was among entrants who submitted ideas for a character they would like to see in the online project.

DN1, an internet drama set in Doncaster, aims to offer health advice to youngsters. By logging on to the website, users can follow dramas in the lives of the teenage characters who share a house close to Doncaster town centre.

Each illustrated character has their own page with a profile and archives and uses first-person blogs, updated every week, to share their thoughts and feelings.

As different topics are explored in the narrative, such as sexual health, sun safety and exam stress, pages include relevant information, contacts and links.

Lucy's new character, Mia, who is trying to lose weight, will be introduced to the drama from Friday, July 16.

She said: "I'm very excited to have won the competition. I think DN1 presents health advice and information in a very relatable way and I'm looking forward to seeing how my character Mia is developed."

The 16-year-old, who wins a 50 Argos giftcard, is a member of the Doncaster Young Writers' Group run by Doncaster Community Arts and next year will study for A-levels including English literature and language.

DN1 writer Deborah Wain added: "Lucy's entry showed mature insight and imagination. We felt the character Mia would fit in to the world of the drama really well and plan to follow her efforts to lose weight." DN1 has been running since last July.
