Teenager suffers burns in garden fire blast

A TEENAGER was burned in a petrol explosion in Doncaster after throwing fuel on to a garden fire.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Haynes Grove, Thorne, just before 7pm on Tuesday.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "A young man in his late teens had been burning garden waste and had poured petrol over it to get the fire going, which caused the petrol to explode.

"The man was taken by ambulance to Doncaster Royal Infirmary suffering from burns."

The spokesman added that petrol should not be used as an accelerant as it can have "serious consequences". They said: "There are some simple guidelines which should be followed when dealing with private bonfires. Keep a bucket of water or sand, or a garden hose nearby, in case of emergencies.
