Teenagers honoured with Diana awards

YORKSHIRE teenagers were among 70 young people hailed as role models who were honoured last night at the Diana Awards.

A total of 75 young people were honoured at the ceremony for outstanding services to their communities.

Diana Awards were presented to 23 young people including 18-year-old Sophie Hartwell, a student from south London – described as "entirely selfless" by organisers – who nursed her friend suffering from terminal cancer in her own home.

Also honoured was 13-year-old Callum Fairhurst, from Cambridge, for showing "amazing strength of character" following his brother Liam's death from cancer.

He raised more than 10,000 after choosing to continue the legacy left by his brother, also a Diana Award holder, by raising money for charity.

Lee Howe, 17, from Cottingley, Leeds, and Amy Starbuck, 17, from Warmsworth, Doncaster, received their Diana Awards in recognition of more than 2,000 hours of voluntary work between them for St John Ambulance.

Diana Awards, in memory of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, are presented each year to young people who have been judged to be "determined" to make a difference in the communities where they live.
