Teenagers put on their own exhibition at city’s museum

PUPILS at seven Hull secondary schools have been given free rein at a museum to learn how to plan, promote and create their own exhibition.

A total of 34 creative and media diploma students took part in the project and attended the launch of their 1 New Message exhibition at the Streetlife Museum in Hull.

Pupils from Kelvin Hall, Winifred Holtby Technology College, Kingswood College of Arts, Malet Lambert, Sir Henry Cooper, Sirius Academy and Newland School for Girls have spent a day a week on the project since November, and were able to enjoy what they had achieved when the display was officially opened by the Lord Mayor, Coun David Gemmell, at a private launch event.

After studying artefacts and visiting sites across Hull for inspiration, they were split into two teams – the artists who would create the work and another group dedicated to its planning, promotion and installation.

The art works were all developed from photographs.

Sophie Holt, 14, created The Signpost of Life, a street sign containing messages such as “Peace”, “Truth”, “Resolved”, and “In The Past”.

A picture of 25 pairs of shoes and trainers taken by Jodie Winterbrook, 15, is entitled Don’t Judge and is accompanied by the message: “Before you judge me, walk a mile in my shoes.”
