Teenagers win grant for estate radio

A GROUP of teenagers discovered they were on the right wavelength when they were awarded 15,000 to set up their own radio station.

The team of six 14 and 15-year-olds will soon be roaming the streets of Hull’s Bransholme estate with microphones and will be airing community news and views from a digital broadcast centre.

The teenagers from Winifred Holtby School, led by Chloe McKenzie, 14, Luke Smith, 15, and Paris Hall, 14, aim to launch Bransholme radio in the spring.

Miss McKenzie, who wants to be a musician or a broadcaster, said they’d be looking to promote local talent.

“It is a big grant and not only did we have to submit a bid we also had to be interviewed by a Youth Opportunity Fund panel and put forward a strong case. When we heard that the grant had been approved, we were ecstatic.”
