Telegraph pole death of binman

A REFUSE worker was killed yesterday in an apparent freak accident in Leeds.

A bin lorry was reversing along a cul-de-sac, away from Town Street, Beeston, at about 8am when it hit a telegraph pole.

The wooden pole fell and struck a 55-year-old binman on the head, causing fatal injuries.

West Yorkshire Police are appealing for any witnesses to the accident on Beeston Park Terrace to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who left street by vehicle around the time of the collision.

A Leeds City Council spokeswoman said yesterday it was aware of an incident involving one of its vehicles in Beeston.

"The police are investigating what happened, therefore it is not appropriate for us to comment further at this stage," the spokeswoman added.

Witnesses should call 0845 6060606.
