Ten arrested after fatal crash closes M1 all night

TEN people have been arrested after a crash on the M1 last night which left one man dead and closed the northbound carriageway for nine hours.

Police said nine men remained in custody and a tenth had been released on police bail.

The four-vehicle pile-up happened at around 6.40pm on the northbound carriageway just before junction 38 and involved a white van, a green Honda Civic, a black Vauxhall Astra and a yellow Honda Civic.

The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles were trapped inside. The male passenger, from Sheffield, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries from which he later died.

The male driver was taken to Pinderfields hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the movements of the vehicles immediately before the incident to come forward.

The southbound carriageway of the M1 was closed for an hour but the northbound lanes remained closed all evening.
