Tents firm rescues scouts hit by theft

A scout group is celebrating after a camping accessories company offered to replace its stolen tents.

The cubs and scouts of the 1st/2nd Yorkshire Scout Group were left devastated after thieves made off with their trailer and tents worth around 5,000.

The group, based at a community centre in Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, had to cancel a planned camping trip to nearby Gomersal in December after losing all their kit.

But camping company Vango has now pitched in after a company representative read about the theft in the Yorkshire Post on Wednesday.

A Vango representative contacted Debbie Ward, the group scout master, and offered to donate six replacement tents.

It means the cubs and scouts will now be able to go camping in December.

The Scottish-based company has given the group four Vango Halo 200 tents and two Vango Icarus 400 tents to replace the stolen equipment, some of which was over 25 years old.

A Vango spokesperson commented: "Vango has been supporting scout groups since the brand was founded over 40 years ago and we are dedicated to encouraging young people to explore the great outdoors. We're thrilled to be able to help the group and we look forward to hearing all about the trip."

Scout leader Debbie Ward said: "I was flabbergasted when I received the call. It was totally out of the blue and left me speechless.

"I can't believe how generous Vango are being. It restores my faith in human kindness. It looks like we may now be on track to go ahead with our special Christmas camp. I would like to thank Vango on behalf of the children of the 1st / 2nd Yorkshire Scout Group."

Police are investigating the theft of the gear, which included a box trailer worth 3,000 and 2,000-worth of camping accessories.

The trailer was taken from an address in Slaithwaite Road, Dewsbury, on Sunday. The equipment was not insured because the group could not afford it.
