Tesco moves onto council offices site

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has announced plans to build a new store on the site of Rotherham’s council offices and central library.

The library and offices are set to move to a new purpose-built civic centre that is currently being built at the former Guest and Chrimes site alongside Rotherham United’s new football ground.

Developer TCN Property Projects and Tesco said the plans also involve a “multi-million pound investment” in the town’s road network, including removing the Centenary Way flyover, upgrading pedestrian crossings and improving access to the bus terminal.

Rotherham’s existing Tesco store on Market Street will close and be replaced with the “new and improved” Tesco Extra store.

More than 200 jobs will be created and all staff at the current store will be guaranteed job at the new site.

A public exhibition displaying Tesco’s plans will be held in Rotherham Central Library next week.

It will be open from 2pm until 7pm next Thursday, November 17, and from 1pm until 5.30pm on Friday.
