Tesco under fire over store plans

PLANS to demolish a pub to make way for a Tesco store are being opposed by residents who say they do not want a busy shop so close to their houses.

Two councillors have also raised objections to plans for two retail units and the demolition of the former Grey Horse pub at Birchencliffe in Huddersfield, which has now been closed for some time.

Councillor Tony Brice believes Halifax Road is already heavily congested and two new shops will cause problems of noise for people living on Belton Road, particularly at peak times and during shop deliveries.

The proposal would create 21 car parking spaces and six spaces for cycles but residents fear increased on-street parking by shoppers.

Kirklees planning officers say the proposal is in accordance with local and national policy guidelines and should be given the go-ahead.

A report to the planning committee, which meets tomorrow, says the two shops would not have a significant impact on residents or road safety.
