After the advent of the politically correct 1990s it looked as though beauty contests had been consigned to history.

However in 2005 York held its first regional competition for 20 years when women were given the chance to compete in Miss York with the winner getting the chance to compete in the Miss England final.

Later organisers of the Miss England contest confirmed the success of the York event had led the way for the biggest ever competition the following year, with heats introduced in a number of other places including Doncaster and Bradford.
