Oyez, oyez, oyez! Organisers of Yorkshire’s largest Town Crier competition for decades were able to proclaim a success after attracting entrants from across the world.

The event held in Helmsley on Saturday included town criers from Bermuda and Nova Scotia, as well as more local entrants from Scarborough, Filey, Darlington, Knaresborough, Malton and Norton.

The Helmsley Walled Garden at Helmsley Castle provided an appropriately dramatic backdrop for the sights and sounds of the unusual contest, which also included representatives of towns in Devon, Somerset, Surrey, Kent, and Staffordshire.

The history of town criers dates back centuries when they had the important roles of making official announcements and spreading information in their communities each day. While such a service is not so vital in today’s connected world, it remains a tradition worth shouting about.
