Theatre and city to discuss new funding arrangements

A REVIEW is due to be begin to help draw up a four-year strategy for one of York’s leading entertainment venues as its managers come to terms with a reduction in its national funding.

The existing partnership agreement between York Theatre Royal and the city council – which has set out the key ambitions for the venue – is due to end next March.

Senior representatives from the theatre are now due to begin talks with York Council officials to draw up details for a new service level agreement, which would come into effect next April

The discussions will take place at a key time as the theatre faces a significant reduction in its Arts Council funding.

However, senior theatre executives are confident that they will be able to weather the financial implications brought about by the cash cuts.

Chief executive Liz Wilson said: “York Theatre Royal welcomes the opportunity to work with the council on shaping the future of this city.

“The theatre is a flagship company for the city and plays its part in promoting its world class status.

“The new leadership of the council understands the importance of a strong cultural sector in delivering the economic future of York as well as providing the high quality of life that is the hallmark of living in York.

“York Theatre Royal has been given a vote of confidence by the national Arts Council which has confirmed its funding for the next four years and this now provides a solid foundation from which to grow with the ambition in the city.”

The theatre received £611,828 from the Arts Council during 2010/11, but this figure has fallen by 6.9 per cent to £566,764 for the current financial year.

The Arts Council England confirmed funding for 2012/13 will be £583,300, £597,299 for 2013/14 and £612,829 for 2014/15.

York Council has provided £304,000 for this financial year – the same as in 2010/11.

The current service level agreement has been instrumental in marketing the venue and encouraging youth theatre and new talent.

While an exact timescale has yet to be drawn up for the talks, York Council has confirmed discussions will begin shortly.
