There’s no place like home as holidaymakers book breaks in York and Whitby

WHITBY, York and Scarborough are among the top destinations for Britons who are increasingly opting to holiday at home.

Domestic holidays in the UK have more than doubled in the past three years with seven out of 10 households holidaying here this year, according to the annual Travelodge holiday index.

The report surveyed 3,000 households and revealed the number of Britons holidaying at home had more than doubled since 2011.

The top 10 destinations for 2014 include York, Devon and Cornwall, Blackpool, the Lake District, London and Brighton, the survey said.

It is the fifth consecutive year that the domestic holiday trend has grown.

Holidaymakers will spend £15 billion, up £3.2 billion from last year, on their UK holidays, according to Travelodge.

Up to 51 per cent of British households will take lots of short breaks throughout the year, instead of one big holiday.

A trip to the seaside stole the number one spot from city breaks, which topped the poll in 2013.

Top coastal destinations included Cornwall, Devon, Blackpool, Brighton, Scarborough, Bournemouth, Whitby, Skegness, the Isle of Wight and Great Yarmouth.

People from Leeds and Sheffield were among the biggest fans of domestic holidays.

Travelodge chief executive Peter Gowers said: “2014 looks like being the year of the staycation.

“More of us than ever before are being inspired to get up and go and explore what Britain has to offer.

“At Travelodge, we’re seeing particularly strong demand from families and couples having multiple short breaks rather than the traditional fortnight.”

He said people were increasingly looking for “great value” holidays and were finding them in the UK.
