The thin black line

They have long been known as the thin blue line, but Yorkshire police will be dressed in black from today after chiefs agreed a money-saving deal on uniform.

North Yorkshire Police is the last of the region’s forces to scrap its old uniform of white shirt and black tie in favour of all-black shirts.

PCSOs will wear all-blue shirts. Chiefs say the deal cuts the cost of equipping an officer by £200.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal said: “The new shirts have been selected with officers’ and PCSOs’ comfort and effectiveness in mind, not to mention cost-efficiency.”
