Third of families have no workers

Almost a third of households in some parts of the country had no one in work last year, including Liverpool, which topped

Britain's "workless" league table for the second year in a row.

In Liverpool, Nottingham and Glasgow more than three out of every 10 households had no one aged 16 and over in employment.

The next highest rates of worklessness were in Gwent Valleys, East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire said the Office for National Statistics.

Bedfordshire, Surrey, Inverness, Berkshire and Hampshire had the lowest rates at around one in 10.

The study, covering 2009, showed that around one in five households in the UK had no one in work.
