Third of region awaits funds

A THIRD of education authorities in Yorkshire have still not been included in the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme.

Six more local councils Buckinghamshire, Cornwall, Gateshead, Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire and the London Borough of Sutton have been accepted onto the scheme which gives Government money to rebuild and refurbish secondary schools. The six councils will share 420m.

But four education authorities in Yorkshire have still not been included: North Yorkshire, East Riding, Calderdale and York.

Partnerships for Schools, which manages the programme, has given each authority not yet included a place on a priority list based on need. North Yorkshire was ranked 12 out of 70 councils with the East Riding 46th, Calderdale 53rd and York 56th.

Wakefield was the latest council in Yorkshire to be added to the BSF programme. Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield were among the first wave of local authorities and Hull was in the second wave.
