Thousands expected as Pope says Mass

An open-air Mass which will be the culmination of the Pope's forthcoming state visit to the UK is expected to attract as many as 250,000 people, the organisers have claimed.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham said the service to beatify the 19th century Cardinal, John Henry Newman, would take place at Coventry Airport on September 19.

Announcing details of planning for the event yesterday, the archdiocese said invitations to the Mass would be distributed through parishes, schools and other institutions.

The Rt Revd William Kenney, who has pastoral responsibility for Coventry, said he was delighted that the Holy Father was coming to the West Midlands.

Officials currently estimate that as many 250,000 worshippers may attend the event, because a Papal Mass held at the Airport in May 1982 attracted around 350,000 people.
