Thousands join Great Yorkshire Run

Competitors, including MP David Blunkett and World Cup Final referee Howard Webb, inset, take part in yesterday's Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield.

The BUPA event may not have seen any new records set, but it did provide a neck-and-neck finish, with the fastest two male competitors crossing the line just a second apart.

Fastest time on the day was recorded at 28 minutes and 50 seconds from Craig Mottram, who beat European 10,000 metre silver medallist Chris Thompson with a final sprint. The fastest time for a woman around the 10km course was one second over 33 minutes, but for many of the thousands taking part it was reward enough just to complete the course.
