Thousands sign up for Sheffield outdoor water park that may not exist

More than 2,500 Sheffielders have said they will attend an outdoor water park which will supposedly come to the city in the summer.

The Safari Water Park Adventure Tour Facebook event page says the attraction will go all over the UK in July and August later this year, with flumes, slides and rapids promised for the Steel City on August 20.

However, water park enthusiasts shouldn’t get too excited about the news – as there are concerns the event is a scam.

According to online hoax, scam and rumour website ThatsNonsense, the planned events are only set up to lure people to marketing websites.

The image used to advertise the event is reportedly a water park in America and councillors in Manchester have warned locals that similar events set to take place in Sheffield and possibly Leeds could be a scam.

When contacted through Facebook, an event spokesman said the nationwide tour was not a con.

He said: “If the event was a scam there would be sign-ups and requests for data from everyone, so I don’t see how this is called a scam.

“Please understand there are a lot of cities and applications haven’t all been submitted yet until popularity with the events are created fully.”

A Sheffield City Council spokesman confirmed it has not yet received an application from the Safari Water Park Adventure Tour for the event to be licensed.

The water park tour has been likened to the Total Wipeout tours, which were advertised heavily on Facebook earlier this year and aimed to bring the popular BBC obstacle circuit to a number of cities across the country.

Sheffield was scheduled to play host to the Wipeout circuit on September 24 – but the event has since been removed from Facebook.
