Thousands take to streets of city for Great Yorkshire Run

AN ECLECTIC mix of runners from the sublime to the comical took to the streets of Sheffield yesterday as thousands laced up their trainers for the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run.

A field of around 8,000 took on the 10 kilometre course, with the elite athletes joined by celebrities, charity fund raisers and hard working amateurs.

The TV personalities included Ashes to Ashes star Dean Andrews, who played DS Ray Carling in the hit series.

The Rotherham-born actor was joined by members of the Sheffield City Morris Men, who entered the race to raise money for Cancer Research.

Gemma Steel was a surprise winner ahead of Jo Pavey and Maria McCambridge in the women’s race.

Kenya’s Micah Kogo, a former world record holder over the distance, showed his class with a comfortable victory ahead of Chris Thompson and Andrew Lemoncello in the men’s event.

Steel, the reigning UK half marathon champion, said: “This has got to be the biggest win of my career and to beat someone like Jo Pavey is just unbelievable.

“It’s like a dream which I never thought could happen.”
