threatened for trying to get help

Bennett's original Crown Court case heard from witness Joanne Kilner-Farr, 18 at the time, who told how the driver threatened her immediately the crash as she tried to call for help.

She told the hearing: “He was cradling Kirsty in his arms. I saw she was badly hurt. I got my phone out to call an ambulance. He could clearly see what I was doing. He dropped Kirsty onto the floor and lunged at me.

“He screamed ‘don’t call them because I’m a banned driver. Don’t call them or I’ll smash your face in.’

Bennett then used the handset to summon his stepfather and finally called for medical help after Kirsty had been moved, when he realised she was no longer breathing.
