Threats to Galloway probed by police

Bradford West MP George Galloway said yesterday he was taking extra precautions after serious threats of harm were made against him.

Police confirmed they are investigating the threats against the MP, but have declined to discuss the precise nature of them.

A spokesman for the newly-elected MP said: “The police are talking to everyone who is involved in this.”

Asked how Mr Galloway was handling the threats, the spokesman added: “He has been very cool about it but obviously he is taking sensible precautions.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We can confirm we have received an allegation of threats made towards Mr Galloway and that enquiries are ongoing.”

Mr Galloway, 57, has become one of the country’s best-known political figures, renowned for his flamboyance and appearance on TV’s Celebrity Big Brother.

He has caused waves in the city since he replaced Labour’s Marsha Singh who retired because of ill health.

He has demanded action over the fate of the crumbling, former Odeon cinema in the town centre and has called for an inquiry into the Westfield scheme for a massive shopping centre in the centre of the city.

He has also been intensely critical of Labour leader Ian Greenwood.

He recently accused him of “cowering behind” a Labour Party probe into suspended Heaton councillor Imdad Hussain, “which my revelations were responsible for launching”.

Earlier this month the Yorkshire Post revealed that the Labour councillor had been suspended by the party.

The 42-year-old was disqualified as a company director for seven years after his insurance claims company went into liquidation.

Councillor Greenwood, (Lab, Little Horton), said: “If someone is threatened then it is up to the police to take action. I have no other comment to make apart from saying that I support the police.”
