Three arrested after high-speed van chase

Three men have been arrested following a high-speed police chase across North Yorkshire which saw officers threatened with violence.

At about 12.25am yesterday, police officers on patrol in Sherburn-in-Elmet attempted to stop a suspicious white transit van, which was travelling slowly near the industrial estate, but it then fled at speed.

During a dramatic pursuit into South Milford, the van stopped twice and tried to reverse into the patrol car, an object was thrown at officers and a passenger threatened police with a metal bar.

While speeding around a bend on its way back to Sherburn, a heavy electrical sub-station generator fell from the van which then continued onto the A1246, where it stopped and again reversed towards the police car.

This time, the three occupants got out of the van and ran off into nearby woodland.

But with assistance from West Yorkshire Police’s helicopter, all three had been arrested by 12.45am.

Two of the men, who remained in custody yesterday, are aged 26 and 43 and come from Bradford while another, aged 36, comes from Knottingley.
