Three in court over couple’s murder

Three men were remanded in custody yesterday charged with the murders of an elderly couple who were attacked with a hammer and a knife at their home.

Wojciech Ostolski, Lieneusz Bartnowski and Macaej Kus, who are all accused of killing Guiseppe and Caterina Massaro, were not required to enter pleas during a four-minute hearing at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court.

The defendants, who are also charged with aggravated burglary, listened to the proceedings through three Polish interpreters.

Kus, 30, and Ostolski, 32, both of Heath Town, Wolverhampton, and 21-year-old Bartnowski, of no fixed abode, were ordered to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court next Wednesday.

All three men were charged by police on Wednesday after a six-day inquiry into the deaths of Mr and Mrs Massaro, who came to England from Italy in the 1960s.

The bodies of Mr Massaro, 80, and his 77-year-old wife were found at their home in Heath Town on Good Friday.

Relatives of the victims spoke of their devastation at a news conference on Tuesday and revealed that the couple were due to become great-grandparents.
